Life . . . Seriously

I am really happy I have been asked to contribute to this blog. I very strongly believe that being easily amused is pretty much the greatest gift God has given me. Sour people may sneer at you, and think themselves above you because of your ability to be delighted at the world around you, but in reality they are denying themselves opportunities for joy.
When faced with an upsetting and stressful situation I like to play a game I will call “what if this were a sit-com?” This game is easy to play and pretty much described by the title. I will give you an example form my own experience not even a week ago.

I rode my bike down to the farmers market with my dog Taj. On the way home, I usually walk my bike until we are a few blocks away from the farmers market. Why? Well me riding a fully loaded bike + spastic dog running next to me + a leash from his neck to my right hand + any type of distraction for the dog = me and my fresh vegetables laying on the pavement. Not cool. So we are walking, steering bike with one hand, holding leash with other, and Taj decided he has to poo. Cool. I like it when he chooses to do that outdoors. So we stop to let him poo and I lay my bike in the grass, put his leash around my ankle and start to pick up after him. Then I turn around to find my dog has lifted his leg and is PEEING ON MY BIKE! On the handlebars to be exact. My shinny electric-blue leather handlebar tape has steaming dog pee trickling down it. Now my initial reaction is

Yeah. Nothing. I have no freaking clue what to do. I just stand there letting him empty his bladder onto my bicycle. Then I scare the crap out of two teenagers skateboarding in the street by yelling “What the hell do you think you are doing!?!?!?!?” The dog then stops peeing, the stake boarders look around to see who I am yelling at and I am thinking about how my gloves are going to smell like pee forever when suddenly . . .
I imagine how I would be reacting if this were happening to somebody in a sit com. I mean seriously, just writing this down, makes me laugh. Reading it you are probably laughing. It’s hilarious! Life is hilarious all the time!
Life is unexpected and shocking and funny. That is not to say life is not significant and important, I think Oscar Wilde said it best when he said “Life is too important to be taken seriously.” So don’t take your life for granted, but please don’t take it seriously either.

Yes! I love your quote. I think we should compile some great quotes about being nice an not serious in life. Thank you for writing on the blog, I look forward to more and now am more anxious to write more.
